THE RIGHT HONOURABLE MR CHOW KON YEOW THE CHIEF MINISTER OF PENANG, MALAYSIA The Right Honourable Mr Chow Kon Yeow is the fifth Chief Minister of Penang. He took over the leadership of the state after the Pakatan Harapan’s victory in the 14th General Election in May 2018. With the mandate given by the people in the 15th State Election in August 2023, he was entrusted to lead Penang for a second term. His credibility was further proven when he won the Batu Kawan parliamentary seat in the 15th General Election held in November 2022. Born in November 1958, Mr Chow holds a Bachelor’s degree with Honours in Social Sciences from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). He later married Ms Tan Lean Kee, and they were blessed with two children. Mr Chow started his career as a journalist before becoming the Political Secretary to former DAP Secretary-General and Tanjong Member of Parliament, YB Tan Sri Lim Kit Siang, from October 1986 to 1990. After winning the Pengkalan Kota State Assembly seat in 1990, he became the Tanjong Member of Parliament in 1999. Mr Chow retained the Tanjong seat for two terms in 2004 and 2008. In the 2008 General Election, under the Pakatan Rakyat coalition, he also won the Padang Kota State Assembly seat and became a Member of the State Government Executive Council responsible for Local Government and Traffic Management. DAP continued to claim victory in the 2013 General Election which saw Mr Chow retaining the Padang Kota seat. He carried on to serve as a Member of the State Government Executive Council with an additional portfolio related to flood management. In the historic 14th General Election, Mr Chow once again successfully defended the Padang Kota State Assembly seat and concurrently won the Tanjong parliamentary seat. At the party leadership level, he served as the Penang DAP Chairman from 2000 to 2024 and as DAP National Vice Chairman from 2004 until March 2025. He currently remains a member of the DAP Central Executive Committee (CEC). Leading the Penang State Government for a second term, Mr Chow is determined to realise the Penang2030 vision, aiming for a Family-Focused Green and Smart State that Inspires the Nation. He is committed to continuing the efforts initiated since 2008. Moreover, the government led by Mr Chow will represent unity, development, the well-being of the people, and good governance to ensure Penang advances to the next level, allowing its people to enjoy the abundant fruits of this blessed land.
